Day 76 - The Ugly Christmas sweater Phenomenom

Who could ask for more?  A crew neck sweatshirt with a happy Christmas Tree made of happy Christmas bears.   On the last day before break we have an ugly sweater contest.

Have a great holiday season!

DAY 75 - I got my nails did..

Yep, shellac is awesome
So yesterday, I had a "me" day.  I got my hair and nails done up.  The nail lady said that I had nice nails.  Whenever they are long, I like to get them painted.  I guess i have nice nail beds.. Thanks Mom.  I can't paint my own nails or do my own hair, I guess that is a side effect of being a gym rat and playing basketball everyday forever.  So I am riding out my new hair do until about Friday.

I supported local business in both ventures and then had dinner at a local eatery with a friend.   It was a great day.  Sometimes you just need to do you.

Miss B.

Again, dress down day.

Day 74 - Oh Yes, Dress down for the rest of the week.

Santa came early this year.  Dress down for the rest of the week.  This is one of the great perks of teaching.  Jeans, a school shirt (which was a yearbook fundraiser which is my club), and sneakers.

High socks and skinny ankles..
Yes, I am wearing low top Chuck Taylors.  For some reason, ala Wiz khalifa and his Taylor Gang (He is a rapper from Pittsburgh who wears Chucks) have brought chucks to our school in a big way.  I guess I am just old, but didn't Snoop Dogg wear them all the time too????  Anyway....

I remember being in NYC when I was little, maybe 10 and my sister and I got some Converses.  Just to let you know how fashionable I was at 10, my sister and I both got high top, no not like the ones that just cover your ankle, but ones that went almost half calf, like boots.  Mine were Teal on the outside, but when you folded them they were an electric yellow.  I always wore them down.  Bianca, who is a little more conservative, got gray and pink (not sure inside/outside colors).  I just google searched to find them, but to no avail.

Since then, I have always had a pair, (I can only remember)  Batman pattern high tops, Black with pink high tops, and now black and white low tops.  I have matured so much :)

Day 73 - The quick change in the AM

I had a skirt ready for this one with some patterned tights, but when I woke up this morning from a pretty crappy night of sleep (which is weird for me because I am really good at sleeping) and changed my thoughts.  It was super chilly in my bedroom and the black pant option was screaming my name.

I was looking through my SELF magazine and was noticing the playfulness of patterns.  I want to do this more often but not sure the correct way to do it.  All the magazines say chose one big pattern and then choose a complimentary color palette with a smaller pattern.  When I play fashion show at home, it never seems to look right (and who knows the comments that I would get here??).

This is also a short week, so I don't really want to waste my cool winter clothes before the holiday.  I don't know why I think like this but for some reason, I don't dress the same on short weeks.

Nothing special.

Overall Grade:  B (again for boring, Monday of a short week)

Day 72 - Online drama

Oh my!  let's talk about drama.  High School drama is so great.  It usually stems from something quite insignificant that escalates into he said/she said (or more likely she said/she said).  Everyday, I hear something new that occurred on the weekend or that night, the change from when I was in High School is that the drama has now all gone online.

Gone are the days that you have to confront someone for stealing your boyfriend or insulting your outfit to your face, all you have to do is log on to Twitter and have a tweet battle or sign into Facebook and chat a battle or leave suggestive status updates that can be taken in any manner.  These two forums allow for anonymity and extreme arrogance.  You can definitely say something online or text that you would never say to anyone's face.  So how gutsy do you really have to be anymore?  A simple text can start the drama of the century that will only be actually discussed with others that aren't even involved behind closed doors of the classroom when within the hallowed halls of a high, you will eventually pass whoever that you need to confront, but you have your online shield.

I am not one for drama, but I do understand the gutsy - ness that comes with the safety net provided by the computer or cell phone.  My advice to this online generation is that technology can be helpful to get your ideas across, but don't underestimate the value of true face to face communication.  So many statements that occur online can be "Lost in Translation" with no tone or inflection which might eventually lead to something lost that can easily be found over coffee with great conversation.

Day 70 - Casual wednesday

There is nothing wrong with a denim shirt.  (Well maybe with jeans).  This is a lazy outfit, but still put together.  I got called to go to work last night, so my outfit planning was cut to the 10 minutes that I gave myself to get ready.

Studded heels.  Awesome.
As I look at this again, I think I look pregnant.  This would be the second time this week (The first picture on Day 68 is still on my phone and I didn't upload it).  I need some new clothes.  (But at least my shoes are cool)

Overall Grade:  C (Just getting by)

This is just a complain type day.  I have Christmas break fever.  6 Days, 6 days.

Day 68 - " You look like you are 10"

First, i would like to apologize that I have been slacking on the photos.  My student teacher would take them and now that she is gone, my in class photog is gone too.  I have now started to just ask random students.  Gonna make it happen this week.

There is something about this jumper that makes me feel like a little kid.  Unlike my fitted adult jumper, this one is just so child like.  Maybe because it is not form fitting at all and just flows or maybe it is the thick straps, I just can't put my finger on it.  I went with the patterned tights. (Suprise) and a solid shirt to try to keep some adult aspect on my 32 year old frame.  A belt might be the way to make it more mature (Don't have an extensive collection of accessories, especially belts) necklaces, earrings.  Who knows???

These boots are Nine West and for as high as they are Super Comfortable.

Overall Grade:

Day 69 - Pattern craziness

I think that I definitely lost it with this one.  3 patterns shown (4 if you count my socks).  My heart shaped patterned sweater vest.  Polka dot button down and navy pants with red and white striped pants.  I am not sure that I want to write very much about this one.  It is sort of embarrassing as I look at the pic.  I look sloppy and pregnant (which I am not so this is an epic fail).

Overall Grade:  F

Day 68 pic is on my phone, but I left the cord at home..My stupid icloud is not working.

Day 67 - High School Sports

I love high school sports, maybe in an obsessive way.  There are countless days that my dad, brother and I will sit around and try to figure out the best athlete in this sport or name all the professional athletes from the WPIAL.  Student athletes have a lot on their plate with academics and athletics especially when they are practicing til late into the evening and then need to be studious.

It is one of the purest forms of athletics left.  The main incentive for HS students to be athletes is the maybe a collegiate scholarship, but there is a miniscule chance that will occur, so play for the love.  The collegiate level of athletics is an amazing achievement and I love when I get to see one of those Division 1 athletes in a high school arena. Those athletes are obviously above and beyond the talent of those around them and still just playing for the love.  If only in a college atmosphere the love was still evident, not the contract that could be waiting in the wings.

Embrace HS athletics, support your local district.

Day 66 - Just a mess

Black dress and messy hair is not the best combination of looks.  I was too lazy last night to wash my hair and I definitely don't wash in the morning because it will cut into my sleep time.  So this is what you get.  A huge mess.

This black dress is soo old.  Old to the point that I have no idea when I got it.  I only know that it is from Express but has to be years old.  I am racking my brain trying to figure out what I bought this for and cannot figure it out.  Why would I need a black dress years ago when life consisted of work uniforms ad sweat pants?  Anyway.  This is an embarrassing outfit and I apologize if I let you all down.

Overall Grade: Incomplete. (No pic.  I got to get on it.  Two in on week.  Oops)

Day 65 - All that glitters is gold.

It is the holiday season, so why not some glitter.  This turtleneck I only bring out during the holidays.  There is something about glitter shirts that are festive.  I got this gen at Victoria's Secret online for $5.00.  Oh yeah, an after season sale (and probably no one liked it..that is how I get great deals).

I also just got these pants back from the dry cleaners.  The only reason that I took them was because the hem fell out and the staple that I was using just wasn't so fashionable.  Get this:  4 pairs of pants hemmed and dry cleaned and the bird shirt (see previous post)= $60.  Highway robbery.  That is the reason that I left them in the cleaners for 2 full months.

I have been on a little earring kick so these butterfly numbers look like they are the size of pies.

Overall grade:  A- (I like the sleekness and professionalism of this outfit)

Miss B.

Day 64 - Those aren't your colors

I agree that these aren't my colors.  Don't get me wrong, these are great fall/winter colors, but I just am not really liking them on with my skin tone.  I do better with bright, hard colors like red and blue, but this purple is a little weird on me.

Although I do like the textures together. There is something about corduroy that makes me feel like a kid.   I know that until recently, I have always had a pair of cords.  It just isn't my thing anymore.  I am not knocking people that wear them (Bianca!!) but I currently do not own a pair.  I am not opposed to cords, but....  I think that texture is an important part of an outfit.  I wish that I played with this concept more.  I just don't have the items to do this.

(Completely forgot to take a pic, I will do it today)

Overall Grade:  C (one of those that looked good on the hanger thing)

Day 63 - Red Leopard print.

Here it is, the infamous Red Leopard print shirt.  Two years ago, I gave a journal assignment that was "Choose a color and describe it"  One of those vague ones that students hate and teachers love.  I have a very animated, personality plus class that year and that day I had on this shirt.  One student wrote this for his journal entry:
Italian Dunkers and leopard.  Awesome. Thanks Mrs. Saville!

" Red with leopard print is one the most unique colors.  It is now my favorite color because Miss Barr is wearing it today.  Red with leopard print is so dazzling and anyone who wears it looks amazing :)  If I could wear red with leopard print without looking weird, I would, just so I could look as flattering as Miss Barr.  This is why red with leopard print is my favorite color."

So from now on, this shirt will be known as Red leopard print shirt.

Overall Grade:  A (Always a crowd favorite)

Day 62 - When a fan is a fan?

As most of you know, I live in Pittsburgh.  The city of bridges, the origination of the Big Mac, Home of Iron City Beer, and ecstatic sports fans.  There is something to be said about the passion that this city has for all of its teams (well, minus the Pirates).   We have the most educated female fans that buy the most gear (not that pink stuff, only black and gold here)   Heck, we had a 2 hour delay at school on the Monday after the Superbowl becasue the Steelers were in the game.  After the Steelers lost, they came out with absentee statistics and productivity reports from local business showing how the loss affected people in their jobs.  Any day of the week, someone is talking about the teams, buying the newest gear, or attending a game.  But I do pose a question:  When and where is a jersey appropriate attire?  (Especially guys).

Regardless of the season, guys can be seen anywhere with a Steeler Jersey on.  Is is appropriate attire at the local watering hole, for a guy between the ages of 21-40 to wear a Jersey on a random Saturday night out of season?  Believe me, it happens more than you think.  Come on guys, how about a golf shirt in the summer or a button down in the winter, god forbid a sweater or great jacket.  I get it, you love your team (as do I, but I am not out wearing my Steeler Jersey as a dress when I go out)  You would be the first snicker at a group of girls not dressed to a T.  I am not saying that you can never wear a Jersey, just save it for gamedays.

Day 61 - Your hair and your sweater match

This is day three of feeling horrendous.  I forgot my lunch, I couldn't find an ice scraper,  and I was running late this morning, and to add insult to injury, I have to close the restaurant tonight.  Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy working, but tonight, Lifetime movies, some hot tea seems like the best idea.  (Enough complaining).

I got this sweater at Modcloth.com.  This is a vintage inspired online shoppe that was originated in Pittsburgh, but now has reached the west coast.  This sweater reminds me on those those childhood silhouette pictures that your parents would make you sit through.  I thought that we were the only ones that got those done, but you would be suprised how many people have them in their homes.  I like the plain girl that sorta resembles me.  I try to always wear my hair up so that it gives people the illusion that I got this sweater made with my own image.  (weird, I know, but so funny)

These shoes are about 4 inch wedges.  They look like athletic shoes (converse-esque) which is always a selling point for me.  They are pretty cool with pants or skirts.  I always get compliments when I wear them.  Thank You Kenneth Cole.

Overall Grade:  A (I really like this sweater and would wear it everyday, but that would be boring)

Day 60 - Is your sweater on backwards?

It is definitely become sweater season in the past few days.  Considering it was 60 some degrees this weekend, we have deserved to now pull out sweaters out of the basement and be warm.

I got this gem at H & M.  I loved it because it looked like I had my sweater on backwards (Kris Kross style).  The other aspect that makes this sweater amazing is that it has a peter pan collar (I guess here is another reference to my catholic school days).  It looks like I have a shirt on underneath. Oh the illusions that this sweater brings.

Front
Back

Bottom half:  H & M pencil skirt which fits so well, and then some Betsey Johnson rose bud tights.  (The outfit was a little mundane and boring without my cool tights)

Overall grade:  B

Day 58 - Read some books.

I am a reader.  I love books.  I know that I do not read enough, but when I get into it, it is like an itch that I can't scratch until I finish the book.  Recently, I have been reading alot of YA (Young Adult Novels.  These novels are specifically tailored for 14-21 year olds.) because many of my students read these types of novels and I feel that I should be current on what they like.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an amazing book.  It is the first of a trilogy about a strong female character who represents her "district" in a post apocalyptic almost communistic state.   She is chosen to represent her district in the annual "survival of the fittest" among teens of all of the districts.   It sounds weird, but read it, it is a great ride.  Katniss is an amazing role model for young women, strong but still emotional with the ups and downs of any teen.   I loved this book and couldn't put it down.  I have never read a book like this, original and brilliant.   There are two more in the series, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, which continue Katniss' journey and how she can't choose between her two suitors.

Yes, I am 32 and loved this book.  I had riveting conversations with my students about the complexity of this book.  This poses the question:  Why are  we reading the literary cannon chosen by people that are removed from the youth of America?  I can get deep conversations from Hunger Games, (Twilight, Harry Potter, etc)  but can't get a peep about The Odyssey or Shakespeare.  I understand the importance of language and history but there are great books written in the last few years that students would appreciate more.  In Principal Barr's school, we would read the coolest, newest, most amazing books that are recent.

Currently reading, Matched by Allie Condie.  Similar in plot to Hunger Games, but leans a little more to a love story than the action packed Hunger Games.

Day 57 - A great piece for any wardrobe at any age

Guest Photographer Alyssa
I totally forgot that I had this great LBJ (little black jumper).  This is a great piece for any wardrobe.  It has function and, more importantly, fashion.  My obsession with jumpers probably started in my catholic school days in which we wore plaid jumpers and knee socks.  The cliche, oh yes.  (Sidenote:  I wore shorts under my uniform everyday and my tights obsession started about 3rd grade.  I also wore Doc Martins and green tights to my 8th grade Catholic school graduation. <Maybe that will be my Wednesday story.)

I especially like this jumper because it is very form fitting without being too risque. You can dress it up or dress in down.  For school or a night on the town.   I have never worn this with a sweet glitter shirt, but I definitely would.  With some cool tights....Maybe an idea for New Year's.  HMMMM..

Overall Grade:  A (Due to the great fit of the jumper)

Day 56 - "Flat boots on a Monday..Come on Barr"

Decorated lockers are awesome.
Today is movie day in room 112.  That means that I will be subjected to watch the same 43 minutes of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (which at first viewing is actually a pretty good movie and 10th graders seem to love it) 5 times today and then Tuesday, the next 43 minutes and Wednesday, so on.  Please not that we do a unit on mythology and Percy is a reward for working hard (and we have a 3 day week).

I wasn't feeling particularly creative so I just pulled out a dress that I haven't worn yet, some black opaque tights and then some slouchy boots.  Yes, they are flat, and yes, they are comfortable.  I think that the black colors (boots and tights) do not match, but at 6 am, i really couldn't tell.  This dress is comfortable and airy especially in this "tweener" winter weather that we are having.  (Not quite winter yet, but between seasons).

Overall Grade:  C (Just average.  I did just get some comments about when the Renaissance festival was?  ***PS.  I have no idea)

DAY 55 - Watch your potty mouth..

There is some sort of problem in the code shifting or our world.  Code Shifting is a linguistic term meaning that within each environment, one changes to the appropriate language.  For instance, at work , you use a different type of language that you would if you were with your friend.

Students and adults today do not understand that there are environments in which certain language is appropriate and other language inappropriate.  For instance in a school environment, there is no reason for a student to address me as "bro".  There are many reasons why this is completely wrong.  1.  I am not a man.  2.  "Bro" is not a grammatical end to a sentence.  3.  We are not related.  4.  I am an adult, not your brother (or your sister for that matter).

Cursing is now the norm.  An F-bomb here or some other expletive there is now just the usual.  I guess that it is my Catholic school upbringing where i can still hear Sister Natalie screaming at me for "taking God's name in vain".  I am not the average curser, I always find a better word to describe the feeling.

So everyone, please think before you F-ing talk.  You sound like a stupid, ignorant, F**.  (I could rave about the inappropriate usage of ignorant, but that would take forever.)

Day 54 - "That might be my favorite outfit"

I wasn't ready
Score, winner, Hooray.  My friend, Kelli, has a great sense of style.  She plays on the browns and neutral side of the rack whereas I am on the whole different end of the store.   So this morning when she said, "That might be my favorite outfit"  I was pumped.  She said that she liked the black and white combo and black pants.

I am not completely sold on this sweater.  The print is a little elementary schoolish and I feel like I am on one of those little kid shows where everything is oversized and jumps around.  The best comment that I heard was that I looked like a game of twister.  I think now that I think about it, i think i really like this monochrome look.

I apologize for the lack of excitement with my shoes.  I have been rocking the Mary Janes for comfort.

Miss B.

Overall Grade:  A.  Sweater is great.

DAY 53 - This is supposed to be a dress..REALLY???

Shirt shorter than fingertips..You do the math.
Here is a Barr gem.  I love this pattern and is a great shirt, but as a dress...REALLY?  If i wore this as a dress, there would be nothing left to the imagination.  (So that is why I paired it with some skinny pants.)  There is no way that I (or any adult woman) could wear this appropriately as a dress.  I wonder if I wore the elastic waist at my thigh, if it would be feasible for a night on town.  No way Jose.  Even in my hayday, I would never have worn this without pants.

And we wonder why girls think it is appropriate to wear inappropriate outfits all the time.  Argh..(If you want to read my opinion on this, I know I jumped on my soapbox in a previous post and ultimately blamed Brittany Spears).  DAY 35

Day 52 - I know it is a redo

According to our official schedule it is day 52, so I am just going to label this Day 52 and move on.  No it is not Groundhog Day.

Unlike yesterday when the weather was amazing (even throughout the evening, I slept with my windows open), today really just sucks.  Rain, Rain and rain.  At this point of the year, just snow already....

Completely forgot to take my pic.
From doing this blog, I have noticed that I really have an affinity for high waisted pants, skirts and jeans.  These pants make me feel like a supermodel.  My principal even said that I look "taller today".  Maybe I grew?  Who could ask for more?  My shirt is from Express (again from my hit Express hard days) and is sheer, so .  This pattern is really not my style, but I like the colors.  It is also a little long in the body which is something that Express is good for.

I have another shirt from this collection that a student wrote a journal about.  The journal is entitled Red with leopard print.  Just wait.

Overall grade:  B (Nothing special, a little weird)

Day 53 - It's a heat wave

It's going to be 64 degrees and it is November 14.  Hooray, but that does pose a fashion question:  To tight or not to tight?  This weather is that whole tween where you could go either way with the leg ware.   I always lean toward the covered leg.  I love tights (as you know..and my legs are whiter than usual in the winter months).  Hence the opaque tights.  (sorta boring).

the face of 53 days getting my picture taken.
The button down is from Express, again an amazing sale, I think it was only about $12.00.  If you look closely, there is a sheer pattern of circles.  I like the mystery to it.  I really like how high waisted skirts fit my body.  I have a super small waist and they usually hit me perfectly there.  This one is also from Express.  I think that I got this when I was running my Express card up and up and up.  I have stopped doing that due to the fact that I know I can shop around to find similar items.  The belt is an Express/ Marshalls find.  $3.00.  Wahoo.  This belt is reversable so you can have silver or black.  Two great neutrals.

Overall grade:  A  (Considering my friend who always makes some kind of Pirate reference said I looked nice, and I proceeded to respond with "Are you making fun of me?" :)

Day 51- Photo retake day/ dress down

Sleepy!
So cozy

Today is picture retake day.  If you a religious follower of the blog, you know that this day is the bane of my existence.  This day is not that bad compared to the first day.  Students know that I don't play, so don't come here and just hang out.  With the low attendance to picture retake, this isn't that much of a problem so the stress level is a little lower.

Here is my dress down day outfit.  You can always get away with jeans and a Valley T -Shirt.  I also just bought these Uggs at a major sale at Nordstrom.  (For as ugly as Uggs are, they are so warm and quite functional in the winter here in the Burgh)

Day 50 - Head of the Nerd herd

Glasses and a sweater vest? Oh yeah, nerd alert.  I like a good sweater vest.  It is fashionable and functional.  It adds that additional layer, but not too much, to keep you a little more snug (the equivalent of leg warmers, but only for your torso).

My sleeves look great.
The issue of the sweater vest came up in a "Barr" conversation on Friday after school.  Alex, another teacher at school, loves sweater vests.  And here is why:  You don't have to iron your button down.  His exact words were, " Just throw it in the dryer and then hope that the sleeves aren't wrinkled and then add the sweater vest.  It's perfect".  I like how he is thinking, anything not to iron.
Exhausted from parent teacher.  need a nap.

As for the glasses,  I slept with make up on and my eyes are really itchy.  ooops.

So here is my ode to the sweater vest.  (And thanks to Alex for the inspiration)

Day 48 - Where is your french hat?

I had a whole sweater vest ensemble ready for today, but a last minute change to my French themed outfit.  This was not the intention, by any means.  Personally, I thought I looked like I was from the 50's with my neat hot pink belt.  Now that I re-evaluate, maybe there is a French flare to my ensemble.

Quiet, class is going on.
To keep with the theme of the day, French, I decided to take my photo in front of the French classroom.  (I look like an idiot because class was going on across the hall and I didn't want to have all of the students see my photo shoot)

This is a wacky week. Tuesday is parent teacher conferences and Friday is inservice.  So Friends, you wil only get 3 days of fashion fun.

Overall Grade:  A (for the international flare)

Day 47 - Gym Class heroes

Matchy, matchy.
Our district has been contemplating getting rid of gym classes due to the recent budget cuts.  Luckily for my friends in the gym department, the district decided to keep the activity class period.  From my athletic background, I think that it is so important to get active, in any way possible.  Gym class gives you the opportunity to just run around and get nutty for 40 minutes each day when for the rest of the day, students just sit there in desks learning.

Check out my outfit.  Is this trendy?

In Principal Barr's school (my imaginary school that I run and I am contemplating getting my principal papers), gym would be important to the daily schedule.  Any class can be taught in a gym environment.  Science, English, Math...  the possibilities are endless.

My friend Ashley is the gym teacher and really rocks out the fashion side of her job.  Decked in matching gym suits everyday and accessorizes her outfits with watches and pens (of all things)  We have discussed the fact that i have only seen her in jeans about 5 times all year.

I love dodgeball.

Day 46 - Navy saddle shoes and jeans???

oh no, I beeped...
All of my dress pants are long in length and must be worn with heels, hence the reason that I do not have a lot of flats.  When my sister bought me these amazing saddle shoes, I had no idea how I would be able to wear them to school.  So let's talk about tailored denim.  (A whole different ballgame from fashion denim and too many specific details to get into it now).

I bought these jeans (and yes I know it is Thursday, but I dressed it up with a suit jacket and to be clear, there is no specific rule against jeans in our dress code) at the summer outlet sale at White House/ Black Market for ...get this....$5.00.  The tag read $98.00.  What a deal.  They had a tutu for $5.00 and I look back now with regret.  I fell in love, not only because of the great price, but the fit.  Long enough, but not too long.  I highly recommend the cut too.  A little bigger in the thigh, but perfect waist size.
Old skool saddle shoes.  Brand spanking new.
I also tried a suit jacket.  We all have them and the Men's jacket is a trend, but to me, too many layers.  It just makes me feel constricted and that I am going to start sweating profusely at any moment.

Overall Grade:  A (Saddle shoes, a definite new fave..and it is 2011)

Day 45 - Fall into the Gap

Little photo booth action.
Me?  really?  the gap.  Yes, I must admit that this sweater is from the gap.  I don't usually shop there, but I am sure that I was shopping with Bianca (my sister) who loves her Bass Bucks and Corduroy pants and skirts.  She has a Fun, preppy, vintage style and I think that one time she wore knee socks to work (My hero because I can't seem to find the guts to do it).

Gray cable knit, can't fall any harder from the gap (well maybe some khaki pants).  I remember that this sweater was a great deal.  Super marked down to 19.00.  No idea original price, but I know I wouldn't have spent more than that on a conservative, preppy item.

It is good to keep people guessing.

Oh yeah.  Why not some saddle shoes?  (Courtesy of my sister :)  I wish that I had some ruffle ankle socks.  That would make it amazing.  (I was going to wear them, but I put them on this morning and then need a good practice run with some heavy socks, before a good school day)

Day 44 - Where is my horse?

Well, here you go. I fell right into the trend of the season.  The whole "Riding" thing.  I have wanted riding boots since last season, but didn't man up and buy them because I don't do brown very often, but for some reason, these boots were calling my name. (A Steve Madden - Burlington Coat Factory Especial) And this camel sweater dress (worn as a shirt because it would be way to short for a high school environment), well just call me trendy trendster.   I also have a riding Jacket with elbow patches, but thought it was a little too much (Halloween was yesterday and there is no way I could pull of jockey)
I love trees!

I am not sure how I feel about this color on my sun-kissed skin (that was a joke).  I think that it washes me out like the other colors in this not vibrant/not pastel spectrum.   Camel is quite a mature color and I am not sure that I can pull it off.  I feel so "adult", but hey, that has to happen sometime.

Day 43 - T-shirt Dress up

Once again, I am using my translation of the dress code.  There are two reasons in doing so.  1.  It is Halloween and  2.  Our dress code is pretty open to interpretation.

I guess I could have really dressed up and maybe made a play on my T-Shirt (which reads Ghouls just wanna have fun) and wore some leg warmers and made it an 80's day, but this year I am not feeling the Halloween bug.  I had a Rosie the Riveter costume that I made, but never used.  I guess today at school is the closest that I am getting to the whole dress up concept.

The collared shirt adds professionalism (haha) and again I am going to wear tailored jeans with some flat boots.  (The closest, I can get to sneakers without actual sneaks).

Sooooo Scared

Happy Halloween!  (Tomorrow I will have an abundance of candy due to the fact that High School kids still trick or treat.  Who knew?)

Overall Grade:  D  (Awful shirt)

Day 42 - The News

I am pretty current on all events that occur locally, in my school district and within this great city.  I am also full of trivial facts and weird stories that come in handy on the weekends and make for interesting discussions in class.

I feel incomplete.  I know that I am lacking on national and international news, especially politics, here in our own country.  60 minutes just isn't cutting it.   I want to be an educated citizen and I think that I need to really commit to expanding my knowledge of the world around me and not just the city I live in.  With an important election on the horizon, I feel that we all need to make a decision based on the information and betterment of our country (This is in no way politically charged, just an introspective look at myself and at the knowledge that I can acquire and have not done so).

So this week, I was in the library and saw a Time magazine that was about the Occupy Wallstreet movement, an article on Herman Cain and schools made for kids that get bullied.  I figured that it was a place to start.  Such interesting stuff.  I think that I am going to commit to being informed.  I am going to gather information and make sure I am current on all things that can affect me.  You should too.

Day 41 - Crappy weather, crappy outfit

Just boring.  That is what I should say.

I had a great skirt with a plaid shirt set out for today, but I woke up to the rain hitting the roof and it just screamed to me "It was a pants day".  I went with the fashion denim (because in my head, I think that I have jeans on).  And yes, I have on a turtleneck.

I am already over today.  (And it is only 8:11)  Sorry.  Crappy weather, crappy outfit = crappy mood.

No pic due to the fact that the Yearbook camera was out.

Nothing really to call home about.

Day 40 - Bows Redo

One of the best H & M finds (sale wise).  A cropped bow shirt.  Who could ask for more?   The only issue that I have with this shirt is "What do you wear under it?"  You can't wear a button down with a collar because I would never cover the bow, and a T-shirt comes up too high on the neck.  I always go with a tank top.  Hot pink today, I probably should have gone with Orange for the Halloween season, but that is a great after thought.
I love Michael Jordan.  I wonder if he would wear a bow shirt.

My pants are Express Editor Longs.  Case in point from yesterdays rant on the length of pants in the mall stores.  I like how Editor pants fit, but the regular size 6 is too short for heels, and they only offer boring black, gray and one pinstriped pattern at the store.  So when I saw these, I had to have them.  A little pricey, but still on sale.

Overall Grade:  B  (need to figure out a better solution for the undershirt)

Day 39 - October Pink and long legs

Banana Republic jeans for long legs.
Another dress down day.  Wahoo.  For $2.00 you can wear jeans with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness.  This is great on a Tuesday.  Today, I wore my long leg, big girl Jeans.  I don't have especially long legs, but they are above average, and not many stores have length that works....BUT, I have found a gold mine in Banana Republic.  Not my store of choice, but for some reason, the jeans are heaven sent.  They fit in the waist, hips and legs.  I have multiple pairs, flare, boot, skinny.

And the best part is...I have not paid full price for any of them.  This particular pair (which is my favorite) I got at the Outlet Sale in the summer for.. Get this $13.00.  Major sale price from $99.00.  I am a shopper and sometimes get really lucky.

Overall Grade:  I (Incomplete because this is not a professional school outfit.  In the gradebook, I would have ** so this outfit won't work against my overall grade)

Day 38 - These boots are made for walkin'

Two trends this year:  Sweater Dress and boots (I guess boots have been in for a while, but this is the first year that I have knee high boots.)   This dress is a sweater dress, but is a light fabric so fall is the best season to wear this one.  I also like the white on the sleeves because it has that 60's, 70's vibe (which you all know is one of my "things".  I snagged this bad boy at Ross Dress for Less.  I can't say that I have a lot of luck there, but they have a great dress selection.

This is my happy face.

These boots are an "end of the season" find at Marshalls.  I got them in the summer, marked down to $15.00.  I thought this was a great find.  (The only issue I have with off season shopping is that you have to wait so long to wear items, but in the back of your head, you know that you have something brand new to wear.  **I also have fashion shows at home every once in a while to just remind myself what I have ready for the upcoming season.)

Black and White checkered tights finish off my outfit.

Overall Grade:  A (but I haven't walked down the hall yet, so I might have to come back and edit when I get some sweet compliments.)

Day 37 - This I believe

Every year, we ask our seniors to write about something that they believe in.  And every year, I submit this to the book.  I think that it is a direct reflection of me and has some morsels to live by.
I believe in being
random,
unpredictable,       and
extraordinary.

I believe that everything happens for a reason, be it good or bad, life lessons can be learned from anything.  I believe that everyone listens to a different drummer, even though you might not like the beat, you should still try to dance.  I believe that a strict schedule leads to boredom, so be spontaneous and do something unexpected.  I believe that life is short, but also fragile, so handle with care.  I believe that is healthy to eat chocolate for any or all meals.  I believe that a hard laugh and a good cry are necessary to keep things in focus.  I believe that your parents will become your best friends, even though at this time you might not believe me.  I believe that following a recipe is overrated.  I believe that there is no reason to stress over a bad haircut, it will grow back.  I believe that age is only a number, be it high or low, it is how you feel on the inside that creates eternal youth.  I believe that happiness can be achieved with simplicity, such as green grass, blowing bubbles, a hot cinnamon bun, or a brand new sweatshirt. I believe that everyone you meet touches you in a different way, it might be blurry at first, but eventually will become crystal clear.  I believe in making a life time To-Do list, scratching out and adding when necessary.  I believe that is OK for your clothes not to match and  to make your own fashion rules, which are only made to be broken the next day.  I believe that it is acceptable to leave the dishes in the sink for an extra day.  I believe that your first love will always have a piece of your heart because they were the first one to break it.   I believe that it is amazing to be surrounded by great friends, but don’t underestimate a quiet night on the couch under a blanket with a good book.  I believe that a hot day can only be cooled by an ice cream cone.  I believe that the people who do not always take the traditional paths of life are usually the most interesting.  I believe that moms are the greatest leaders and holders of wisdom, don’t waste the time you have with yours.  I believe that singing in the car is therapeutic and comical at the same time.  I believe that if laughter was currency, we would all be rich.   I believe that it is always better to give a gift than receive, especially on a random occasion for no reason.  I believe that America is a great place, but don’t forget that there is a whole world out there to explore, invest in a passport, the best textbook.  I believe that real life is way more entertaining than drama.  I believe that technology makes communication easier, but getting a letter in the mail can’t be beat.  I believe that life is a “choose your own adventure”, each choice you make has a different exciting, exhilarating ending.  I believe that you, only YOU can make our future better.  I believe that the class of ’12 can do anything that they put their brilliant minds to, Prove it.

Day 36 - "Really, Barr"

What do you think???
Well, I guess I did it.  It took 36 days for a full on non matching outfit.  I actually pulled this outfit last night and completely thought  it looked fine on the hanger.  Due to the amazing response, I guess that I don't really match.  Too many patterns?  I think not. There is blue in my shirt and blue on my tights, that is good enough for me.  I guess in pieces that this outfit would be good, but together it is too much for the average bear.

This Dorothy shirt makes me happy.  And also gets a a wide variety of farmer comments.  Yippie Ki AAAAa

Overall grade:  F (I guess this one didn't go over as well as I thought.  I like it, but I am also getting some funny looks from colleagues and students.  Ooops I tried)

Day 35 - Dear Young Women of today,

I think that this new generation doesn't understand what a great dress can do.  The connotation of "dress"  is that you only need to wear a dress to a formal event (and even then, what some young women think are "dresses"  would be a considered a shirt to me, and my dad would never let me leave the house in that small fabric swatch).  The ladies today need to understand that you can look put-together, elegant, professional, casual, and, even, sexy in a great dress, BUT it has to be the right one.  I own a lot of different types of dresses that have different patterns, represent different eras, cut in different silhouettes.  Just because the "young women stores" that you are shopping in have this item on a mannequin, does not mean that your body shape will look good in the dresses in the store.  Shop for your body, not what is in the store or trendy at that time. (My sister has also done some on the scene cultural research about the skin tight skirts that EVERYONE thinks they can wear.  Amazing research, Bianca).

Look folks, my dress fits and covers my parts.  What a find!!!

And, listen, the "number size in the tag" doesn't matter.  In your little teeny bopper stores, I sometimes wear an 8(oh a 9) or even 10 (or 11). Really?? When in real women stores I wear like a 4.    It is all arbitrary.  Who really cares?

I truly blame you Britney Spears for the sexualization of this younger generation of women.   If we are out and you have some time, ask me about it.  I have a whole thesis on this.  (but I will not get on my soapbox right now.  This blog server won't have enough memory for this rant).

Overall Grade:  B (As i walked into the building, I heard " Did a rainbow throw up on you?, Did you wrestle with Good and Plenty's and Was there a paintball game this morning?"

Sincerely,
Miss B.

Day 34 - Oh the scarf.. Can I pull it off?

I have a student that wears a scarf almost everyday.  They always look so nice on her, but can I pull it off?  She wears them around her neck and they look great.  My cousin wore hers around her arms almost like a shawl.  Could I try that?  Who knows?  I always feel that a scarf should only be worn in the winter when it is cold out, but who am I to not try a new fad?  So....

Here is my attempt at the scarf fashion.  Of course it has bows on it.  (An awesome find at Gabriel Brothers for $4.99).  I am concerned that this for a few reasons:  1.  A scarf.   2.  I am wearing a jacket, (also out of my norm, but why not just go all out)  3.  How many patterns can you do under the scarf and what kind of fabric is appropriate? I went with the short sleeved sweater and skinny black pants.  The outfit itself is pretty boring (so I hid behind the cardboard man), and I am not sure that the scarf matches, but who cares?

Overall Grade: C (I am not sure that a scarf is for me)

Well I tried.

Day 33 - Open toed boots and long legs??

Chilling at my desk, getting ready for the day.
I am really not sure what this trend means.  Yes, i own a pair of open toed boots, but how functional are they. ..Really?  You can't wear them when it gets super cold and who wears boots when it is super warm out.  I think that I liked the price of these (Steve Madden $15.00) more than I liked the functionality of the shoe.
I love tight season.
I do think that they look pretty cool with my multi colored glitter striped tights which are a new addition to my tight collection.  I guess that I am lucky because I have long legs and you get  alot of the tights even over the boots.  (Or maybe you might think that is a bad thing because the pattern is sort of obnoxious, but I love it).  I am sure that some people think that my skirt is too short, but I justify it by the opaque nature of the tights.  (I will use this theory throughout the winter time, not saying that I want to wear short skirts, it all goes back to that long leg thing)

Overall Grade:  A  (Just look at the legs and shoes....)

Day 32 - Let's talk about....

Knitting.  I really enjoy knitting.  It is soothing and relaxing.  The only issue that I have with it:  i can only make a scarf.  i could probably make a scarf that would wrap around the world, but I don't know any other pattern and wish I could make something else.

I do have an extensive collection of scarfs, all different colors, yarn textures.   I sorta wish maybe they were blankets, or sweaters or hats.  My friend Rachel crochets and makes amazing crafts..to this I am very jealous.

I also just give them away.  I will make scarfs and then just hand them to my friends.  But in no way in a timely manner.

So put your order in now.  (but just because I like to knit doesn't mean I do it alot).  I did promise a student one at the beginning of the year, and that never happened.

Basically this is rambling about nonsense, but at least your neck will be warm...But it will probably be the winter or 2015.

Day 31 - Another throwback

Symmetrical.
Adding some fun with checkered tights.

We just got a heat wave.  From super freezing to a beautiful fall day.  This week is crazy.  So I decided to wear my super mod dress.  Another throw back item (not vintage), but the essence of mod.   This dress is not very fitted, but airy and fun.  I like the shape that this creates (especially the days that you want to just be sloppy, but look like a supermodel).

Up hair- do, just because I am lazy.  The ballerina look is something that I go for. (Maybe I should invest in a tutu)

I always wonder:  What era was i really supposed to be born in?  I can't wait to wear my mom's sweater dress from the 60's.  It is Forest green with hot pink stripes.  Vintage and amazing. Just wait.

Overall Grade:  A (Just solely for awesomeness)

Day 30 - Using the system

One of the best things about being in a high school teacher is that you don't have to always wear professional clothes.  There is always a reason to wear a T-shirt.  Canned Food Drive, supporting a club or team, etc.  Case in point:  Spirit Week.   In honor of spirit week, and especially twin day, a few of us have decided to "use the system" and take a break from profession and wear a Valley T Shirt.  A handful of teachers are rocking these amazing tie dyed spirit shirts.   Sometimes you just need to move away from the fashionable and go with the practical.

Just doing a little clean up.
The only issue with dress down days is that you might get confused with students and/or students talk around you like you are a student (whoa mamma).    I will probably get my mac and cheese for student prices.  SCORE.

OVERALL GRADE:  INCOMPLETE (cannot be graded against the other graded outfits.  Completely different tier)

Miss B.

Day 29 - "Yeah that really doesn't match"

There is something great about starting the week on a Tuesday (so Tuesday is technically Monday, but not really because it is Tuesday, so the week goes way faster).  It is also 70 degrees out which is amazing for the Burgh in October.

Keep the non-matching alive
Getting coffee is fun

I was told that I didn't match early on today.  I really thought that the white pinstripes were just a neutral, but I guess I am wrong.  I got stripes going every which way.  Love it.

But I will still embrace the fact (and laugh a little) that I really truly thought that this was completely acceptable and even boring.

I love coffee.

Overall Grade:  A- (just because the minus looks like the beginning of a stripe)

Day 27 - Urbanspoon

I love food.  I love trying new foods and new restaurants.  A great resource for finding restaurants in any city is urbanspoon.com .  This website is a available for any city.  It also ranks restaurants in each city and neighborhood in a specific area.  Other than just an overall ranking, it breaks down by neighborhood, type, price, etc.

My goal is to at least go to one or two of the top 10 overall in the Burgh.  As of today, I have been to only 2 (but the number 1 is Burgatory and I have frequented that place many times.  Kudos to me)

The other aspect of urbanspoon that is helpful is that anyone can write a review.  These reviews are short and sweet and not usually focusing on the food as much as the ambiance, service, and other things that you usually talk about.

If you are visiting a city, it has a cool search called "restaurants near" which pulls all the best places from a hotel, theater, school, other landmarks.  This was helpful when I visited Atlanta (although we didn't use the suggestion, we had many options.

Check it out:  urbanspoon.com

Day 26 - Hot weather and Hot Pink

8th period face.  Anyone see a trend?
I had a dress picked out for today, but when i woke up late and had half of my toes polished (I scratched off the other ones), I wasn't ready to wear the open toes that I  had chosen sooooo here is what you get.  The go to "Bow" and some hot pink pants.  (I am lucky that I had already ironed these bad boys because if not the choices would be limited because ironing is something I rarely do.  I will do it if necessary.  I will not leave the house a wrinkle mess, but ironing is on the tier of vacuuming in my world.  Only needs to be done when truly necessary)

You can't copy my style.  :)
As for my shoes.  I went on a binge on zappos.com last summer and looked at that site for hours.  These shoes struck me for a few reasons.  1.  They were on sale.  2.  They were hot pink.  3. They almost tell a story.  4.  They say the word Rock n Bowl.  (Who wouldn't want a pair of shoes about bowling?)  They are fun and obnoxious at the same time, but still make me happy.
